NEW YORK — Last week, Andy Roddick did the Late Show with David Letterman. Monday night, he did the U.S. Open late show with Bjorn Phau. Roddick’s first-round match was delayed by a longer-than-expected Venus Williams victory, so he didn’t step on Center Court until 11 p.m.
The big-serving American played like a guy in a hurry to get back to his Manhattan home. Roddick neutralized Phau’s quick feet, won the first set in 23 minutes, and advanced to the second round with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 victory that ended just before 1 a.m. The match took one hour and 35 minutes.
“It feels real good to be back on this court,” said Roddick, who won the U.S. Open in 2003. “The later the better. These are the real hardcore fans. I appreciate you staying.”
Roddick dominated all aspects of the match, and converted 83 percent of his first serves.
“After Wimbledon, I didn’t serve great at a few events, so that’s a welcome sign,” he said.
Day One of the 2009 U.S. Open had just become Day Two, and there was Roddick, blood trickling from his right ear, diving for balls. Andre Agassi watched from the ESPN booth and said he has been impressed with Roddick all summer.
“Andy is one of the best competitors in the history of our game, and what he did at Wimbledon impressed me on so many levels,” Agassi said. “For him to handle himself with so much class was really admirable. If I were him, I’d hold my head up pretty high.”
Agassi added that he “loves” what coach Larry Stafanki has done with Roddick’s game, particularly that Roddick not as afraid to turn to his backhand if he needs it.
“Sometimes when tennis players have weaknesses, they avoid them, and that can hurt you,” Agassi explained. “I like that Andy is stepping in and hitting that backhand because it will help him believe in that shot and he can use it when he needs it most.”
Roddick’s next opponent is Marc Gicquel of France.
Björn Phau (born October 4, 1979) is a German male tennis player. He reached a singles ranking of 59 in the world on June 19, 2006. He defeated Andre Agassi 7–5, 7–5 at the 2006 Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships. His main strengths are his movement, foot speed and fitness. He is sponsored by Nike and Wilson. At only 5 feet, 9 inches tall, Phau makes up for his lack of size with amazing quickness. In an interview, Andre Agassi cited Phau as one of the quickest tennis players he has ever faced.[1]
He is the son of a German mother and an Indonesian father.
At the 2007 SAP Open, Phau showed incredible sportsmanship while playing in the first round against Konstantinos Economidis. A ball that Phau hit to Economondis was out, but not called by the line judge. Economidis returned it, and Phau having seen that his ball was out, let the return go by, giving the point to Economidis. Phau went on to win the match and advance to the second round.
In April 2009 at the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston, Texas at River Oaks Country Club, Phau was defeated by American Wayne Odesnik 4-6, 3-6 in the semi-finals.
