Barack Obama, American president gets Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel committee said Mr Obama had created a new climate in international politics and made extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy. Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Corrigan Maguire has criticised the decision to give this year’s award to US President Barack Obama.

“President Obama has yet to prove that he will move seriously on the Middle East, that he will end the war in Afghanistan and many other issues,”

But SDLP leader Mark Durkan said the committee “rightly highlights the president’s extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples”.

Obama is the third US president in office to win the award, after Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 and Woodrow Wilson in 1919. Former US president Jimmy Carter won the prize in 2002.
